Why Listen to BibleGateway with CastReader?
BibleGateway hosts 200+ translations across 70+ languages. CastReader reads any of them — including ones the site's built-in audio doesn't cover.
Any Translation
ESV, NIV, KJV, NASB, NLT — and the Long Tail
BibleGateway's own audio covers a handful of major translations. CastReader reads whatever translation you're viewing — including academic ones (NRSVue, NET, LEB), modern paraphrases (MSG, TPT), and the smaller-language versions BibleGateway ships without audio. Switch translations, the audio follows.
Daily Plan Friendly
Reading Plans Read End to End
BibleGateway's reading plans (Bible in a Year, M'Cheyne, Through the Bible Chronologically) navigate chapter to chapter. Click CastReader on each chapter page and you have an audio version of any plan — without paying for a separate audio Bible app.
Verse Highlighting
See the Verse You're On
Verses are paragraph-tagged on BibleGateway. CastReader highlights the verse currently being read so you can follow along with your eyes — the canonical way to engage with Scripture, with audio + visual reinforcing each other rather than competing.
Clean Audio
Skips Cross-References, Footnotes, and Ads
BibleGateway pages have cross-references in the margin, footnote markers in-line, study-tool sidebars, and BibleGateway+ promo rails. CastReader reads only the passage text — not the reference numbers, not the footnote letter markers, not the sidebar widgets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything about listening to BibleGateway with CastReader
How do I listen to a Bible chapter?
Open the chapter on biblegateway.com in Chrome (e.g., Romans 8 in your preferred translation). Click the CastReader icon. Audio starts at verse 1 and plays through to the end of the chapter.
Does it work with every translation?
Yes — any translation BibleGateway displays as text. The site's own audio is limited to a few major translations; CastReader reads the rendered text directly, so it works for any of the 200+ translations BibleGateway hosts.
What about footnote markers in the verses?
Footnote letter markers (a, b, c) and cross-reference symbols are stripped from the audio. CastReader reads the verse text cleanly without 'Romans eight twenty-eight a' interruptions.
Can I listen to a whole reading plan?
Yes — navigate to each day's reading on BibleGateway, click CastReader, listen, then move to the next day. The Bible in a Year plan is about 12-15 minutes per day at 1.5x.
What about parallel translations (side-by-side)?
BibleGateway's parallel view shows two or three translations side by side. CastReader reads the leftmost column by default — pick the column you want to focus on as the primary view.
Does it read the Apocrypha / Deuterocanonical books?
Yes — for translations that include them (NRSVue, RSV-CE, NABRE, GNT). Open the Apocryphal book chapter and click CastReader as with any other passage.
Can I adjust reading speed?
Yes. 0.5x through 3x. Many readers prefer 1.0x–1.2x for Scripture so the language has room to land. Daily-plan listening at 1.5x lets you finish a 4-chapter day in about 20 minutes.
Is it free? Any limits?
Completely free. No account needed, no chapter limits, no ads. CastReader is a free browser extension for Chrome and Edge.
